General Purpose Rating (GP Rating)
The Duration of the course is 6 months. On successful completion of this course, the candidates will be eligible to join in Indian/Foreign Shipping companies as a Deck/Engine crew. With further sea service, they would be promoted as Motorman/Oil man, Fitter, Able-Bodied Seamen, Bosun. They can also be promoted to officer level with certain service and qualification requirements on passing the examinations conducted by DGS.
They are responsible for safe navigation, cargo handling and allied duties. These ratings are employed in the deck department of the ship and are normally called “Seaman”. They undertake the routine maintenance of the vessel including chipping, painting, greasing, repairs to the ship’s hull, and superstructure. They are trained to operate the deck machinery like cranes, derricks and also undertake the steering of the vessel at sea, are employed as lookouts on the bridge under the officer on duty. A competent person can aspire to become the Master (Captain) of a merchant ship after required seatime and passing various exams.
They are responsible for the operation and maintenance of engineering and electrical equipments on board. These ratings are employed in the engine room for routine maintenance, upkeep of the different machineries, boilers umps, etc., They basically assist the engineers in the routine functioning of the engine room. At sea, they keep a record and monitor the running of the machinery an assist the engineer officer on duty. A competent person can rise to the level of Chief Engineer of a merchant ship after required sea time and passing various exams..

A marine engineer is a professional who is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of all major mechanical and engineered equipment on board a ship. Ships these days use the most modern technology and equipment that can be understood, maintained and handled only by marine engineers.
After successful completion of BE/BTech in Marine Engineering/nautical science/Mechanical Engineering, one can join as fourth engineer or third assistant engineer. Since the job on the ship entails residing on ship for a major part of the year there are other exciting avenues as well. Marine engineers are also employed by engine production firms, ship building firms, research bodies, ship design firms. Starting salary of a fresh marine engineering graduate are usually higher than other engineering branches. Marine jobs are highly paid and enjoyable. The marine engineers get NRI status, which is, tax-free income based on their service at sea, ex-India. They also get the opportunity to see the world through sailing as a profession without any extra expense. Luxurious life through lucrative salary comes as a big compensation being away from home.
Electro Technical Officers
After successful completion of BE/BTech in Electrical Engineering/Electronics & communication, the cadets will join the Ship as an Trainee Electrical Officer. Apart from the regular curriculum, the cadets are trained at in the Campus to monitor normal operations of a main engine including all the auxiliary machinery and the capability to troubleshoot malfunctions and to perform repair and maintenance. Trainee Engineering cadets are trained in using on-board workshops and tools to affect repairs of components and manufacture simple items. The training also includes the development of competency in verbal communication, safety culture in maritime environment and important aspects of shipping. The cadets are inculcated with sense of discipline, team spirit and the right attitude with lot of physical and mental activities.
